What ultrasound shows
Ultrasound uses sound waves to image organs such as the liver, gallbladder, kidneys and thyroid, as well as lumps, soft tissue and the pelvis. Doppler ultrasound looks at blood flow in arteries and veins.
Preparation
Some abdominal scans ask you not to eat for a few hours, and pelvic scans often need a full bladder. The centre will tell you when they book you in.
- Pre-scan telephone consultation with a GMC-registered GP
- The scan at a partner imaging centre
- Consultant radiologist report
- GP review of the report with a written summary
- A GP call if anything abnormal is found
A £25 booking fee secures your GP call and comes off the price.

How long does it take?
Usually 15 to 30 minutes.
Do I need a referral from my NHS GP?
No. Our GP provides the referral after your pre-scan call.
How quickly can I be scanned?
The imaging centre contacts you once we send the referral, usually within a few working days. Scans are not carried out on the day you book.
