What an MRI scan shows
MRI uses a strong magnet and radio waves to build detailed pictures of soft tissue: joints, ligaments, tendons, the spine and nerves, the brain, and the organs of the abdomen and pelvis. It does not use radiation.
Choosing the areas
An "area" is one part of the body, such as a knee, the lower back or the brain. On your GP call we confirm which areas answer your question, so you do not pay for more than you need.
Safety
MRI is not suitable for everyone. Tell us about pacemakers, implanted devices, metal fragments in the eyes or claustrophobia. Open and upright MRI is available in London and Birmingham for people who find a standard scanner difficult.

Common questions
How long does an MRI take?
Usually 20 to 40 minutes for one area, longer for several.
Will I need contrast?
Most scans do not. If your GP advises it, contrast is added for £225 and you will be scanned at a centre that offers it.
Do I need a referral from my NHS GP?
No. Our GP provides the referral after your pre-scan call.
How quickly can I be scanned?
The imaging centre contacts you once we send the referral, usually within a few working days. Scans are not carried out on the day you book.
