Calcium scoring
A quick, low-dose CT scan that measures calcified plaque in the coronary arteries. The score is used alongside your blood pressure, cholesterol and other risk factors to estimate your future risk of heart disease.
CT coronary angiogram
Contrast is injected through a cannula in the arm while the scanner images the coronary arteries in detail, to look for narrowing. Your GP will check your kidney function and heart rate first, and some people need medicine to slow the heart rate on the day.
This is not a test for new or worsening chest pain. If you have chest pain now, call 999.

Common questions
Does it use radiation?
Yes, a small dose. That is one reason a doctor checks the scan is justified before it is booked.
Do I need a referral from my NHS GP?
No. Our GP provides the referral after your pre-scan call.
How quickly can I be scanned?
The imaging centre contacts you once we send the referral, usually within a few working days. Scans are not carried out on the day you book.
